We are an entrepreneurial and creative organisation working at the speed of our global audience.
About the traineeship
We offer an aspiring journalist the opportunity to immerse themselves in journalism for a year of high quality training and work experience. Successful applicants need to be able to demonstrate creativity, resilience in a high-pressure environment and a thorough understanding of the role of the journalist.
Our aim is to make sure you’re in a strong position to apply for your next journalism job once your traineeship ends.
What’s on offer?
- A one year fixed term contract paying £18k per annum
- Multi-platform work experience
- First-class training and mentoring throughout the scheme
- The chance to arrange a news assignment of your choice during the year
What you need to apply
You are a news junky and regularly read the local and national newspapers, watch television and listen to radio news. You have an excellent grasp technology and the role of social media in journalism. You can use your tablet or mobile device to take news quality pictures or record a 60 second news report to stream online. But mainly you are fascinated by story-telling – both the stories themselves and the processes that bring them to life.
There is no upper age limit and the scheme welcomes career-changers who have ambitions to work in journalism, but have been pursuing a career in other industries.
We will consider complete beginners, but we would need to see some solid evidence of your writing skills so we can judge your potential.
If you’re already working as a journalist, then this scheme is not for you – we want to encourage journalism, not egg sucking.
There are no academic entry criteria to apply for the job, We think talent, potential and determination count for more than an academic background.
This job is based in our Witney office, but there will be some opportunities for travel so you will need a passport and be able to work and travel freely within the European Union.
And of course journalism is not a 9-5 job and news stories always break on Friday evenings and over the weekend so you do need to be flexible about working hours. You’ll also be expected to demonstrate you can work with a wide range of colleagues and members of the public where English is a second or third language.
