The Recycler Live Brussels: Pioneering sustainability in the print industry
May 16, 2024
The event saw a full house, with a palpable thirst for knowledge and exchange of ideas. Positive vibes and a collaborative spirit were evident, signalling a promising future for the print industry’s sustainability efforts.
The Recycler Live conference in Brussels is concluding today, marking a pivotal moment in the print industry’s journey towards sustainability. Held at the Martin’s Hotel, the two-day event brought together key players, industry professionals, and environmental advocates to discuss groundbreaking initiatives and future regulations shaping the sector.
One of the most significant announcements came from HP, which revealed its new “SecuReuse” solution.
Historically, HP has emphasised the use of its original cartridges to ensure reliability and optimal print quality, often criticising remanufactured alternatives. However, with the SecuReuse solution, HP is creating an ecosystem that supports the reuse of its cartridges, especially beneficial for EU remanufacturers. This initiative aligns with the principles of the circular economy, extending the lifecycle of printer cartridges.
In collaboration with aftermarket partners KMP, ALTKIN, and Peach, the SecuReuse solution is set to roll out by late 2025 or early 2026.
This initiative coincides with anticipated new EU legislation targeting the office imaging sector, expected to enforce stricter sustainability and waste reduction standards. HP’s proactive approach with SecuReuse positions it ahead of these regulatory changes.
The conference also featured a keynote speech by Mathieu Rama, Senior Programme Manager at ECOS. His presentation on “Ecodesign and Energy Labelling for more material-efficient imaging equipment and cartridges” addressed key issues facing the recycling industry. Rama emphasized the need for environmentally-friendly technical standards and policies, highlighting the role of NGOs and independent repairers in shaping sustainable product policies.
Following his keynote, Rama joined a roundtable discussion with Bram Soenen, Senior Expert in Product Policy for the Belgian government, and Javier Martines, President of ETIRA. This session provided a platform for comprehensive dialogue on the future of recycling and sustainability.
