TCO Certified now offers sustainability certification for more IT products
December 10, 2024
The global sustainability certification for IT products for over 30 years, TCO Certified, adds a new category to cover a wider variety of IT-related products.
With the introduction of TCO Certified, general, it is now possible to apply for TCO Certified for IT products not previously covered, such as speakers, keyboards, and webcams. This development empowers purchasers to ensure proven sustainability for more of the IT products they purchase.
The new “general” criteria allow brands to apply for certification for products that do not fit within existing product-specific categories covered by TCO Certified.
“The introduction of TCO Certified, general opens new possibilities for purchasers. Sustainability is essential, yet many IT product categories have lacked a viable and credible certification option. TCO Certified, general changes this, enabling IT decision-makers, procurement teams, and sustainability leaders to make informed, responsible choices across an even broader range of products,” said Sören Enholm, CEO of TCO Development, the organisation behind TCO Certified.
The demand for more sustainable IT products is rising rapidly, along with increasing pressure on organisations to meet sustainability goals and verify claims in reporting. Expanding TCO Certified to include more product categories not only provides purchasers with more sustainable options but also fosters innovation, supports a circular IT industry, and helps organisations deliver on their sustainability commitments, TCO Certified said.
TCO Certified, general brings together the signature sustainability requirements from TCO Certified in four areas: climate, substances, circularity, and supply chain, as well as mandatory independent verification, ensuring consistency and accountability. It can be applied to any IT product category not currently covered by product-specific criteria.
