Shifting Prints: Hybrid work spurs supplies market reshuffle
December 13, 2024
Keypoint Intelligence forecasts a shake-up in the U.S. and Western European print supplies market, with growth opportunities in hybrid work setups battling a decline in traditional revenue streams.
The U.S. and Western European print supplies market is undergoing significant change as hybrid working reshapes printing habits. A new report from Keypoint Intelligence reveals a dual narrative: while the average monthly page volume (AMPV) is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5% through 2028, total revenues from toner, ink, and paper are projected to decline.
The combined market value, currently at approximately $45 billion (€42.8 billion), is set to contract by $6.8 billion (€6.5 billion) over the next five years. This paradox reflects a fundamental shift in usage patterns, with gains in home offices and small businesses failing to offset the overall reduction in printing.
Peter Mayhew, Principal Analyst at Keypoint Intelligence, is set to address these shifts in his seminar at Remanexpo, part of Ambiente in Frankfurt this February. His presentation, titled “Trends and Drivers: Considering the Impact of AI and Sustainability on the Office Printing Market,” will delve into how disruptive forces such as artificial intelligence, sustainability, and digital transformation are shaping the industry.
“Change can be uncomfortable, especially as it impacts our document printing business,” Mayhew noted. “Whether it’s regulation, AI, sustainability, or digital transformation, they’re all eroding printed page volumes. Strategies are needed to manage and embrace their impacts.”
Hybrid work reshapes the market
The rise of hybrid work is a bright spot in an otherwise declining industry. Increased adoption of A4 laser and business inkjet devices in home offices, micro-enterprises, and small businesses is driving the AMPV growth. Many of these users are turning to print-as-a-service models or subscription plans, which offer convenience and cost predictability.
This trend is reshaping vendor strategies. With fewer players remaining in the market, competition for this new customer segment is intensifying. Manufacturers are introducing compact, efficient devices tailored for non-traditional workspaces, while subscription services are positioning themselves as a cornerstone of future revenues.
Long-term challenges
Despite these promising developments, the overall outlook for the market remains challenging. The traditional office printing sector continues to shrink, and the decline in demand for supplies is outpacing the gains from emerging segments.
Mayhew’s seminar will explore strategies to navigate this disruption, combining the latest data insights with actionable advice for businesses seeking to adapt.
Spotlight on Remanexpo
Mayhew’s talk at Remanexpo, running from 7–9 February 2025, will be one of several sessions addressing the future of the print industry. Key themes will include sustainability, digital product passports, and compliance challenges.
As the industry grapples with change, Remanexpo provides a vital platform for stakeholders to exchange insights and strategies. With new technologies and business models on the horizon, the print supplies market is poised for a transformation that could define its future well beyond 2028.
