Ricoh takes full control of PFU
March 4, 2025
Ricoh finalises its PFU takeover, completing a digital strategy shift beyond print.
Ricoh has completed the acquisition of the remaining 20% of shares in PFU Limited from Fujitsu. The deal, worth ¥22.67 billion ($152 million / €140 million), makes PFU a wholly owned subsidiary of Ricoh.
PFU is best known for its Fujitsu-branded document scanners. It has a strong reputation in information management and IT solutions. The company has been a key player in the market for decades.
This latest move follows Ricoh’s initial acquisition of an 80% stake in PFU in September 2022. That deal saw Ricoh take control of PFU’s operations as part of its wider shift into digital services and IT infrastructure. The acquisition aligned with Ricoh’s strategy to expand beyond traditional printing and into workplace automation, edge computing, and AI-driven solutions.
PFU has a long history in the imaging industry. The company was originally established as Uchida Yoko Electric in 1960. In 1987, it became PFU Limited following a merger between Panasonic, Fujitsu, and Uchida, forming the name PFU. Over the years, it developed a strong relationship with Fujitsu, eventually becoming a subsidiary of the tech giant. PFU’s scanners are well known in professional and industrial markets, particularly for high-performance document digitisation.
Ricoh’s full takeover strengthens its position in the digital workflow sector. The company sees PFU’s technology as a key asset in its digital transformation push. The acquisition is expected to accelerate Ricoh’s growth in IT services and automatio as the company continues to diversify beyond print hardware. Ricoh aims to boost its offerings in cloud-based workflow solutions, cybersecurity, and enterprise IT.
PFU will continue to operate under its existing brand structure. Fujitsu-branded scanners will remain in the market, but with Ricoh now calling the shots. The future will see a deeper integration of PFU’s technology into Ricoh’s broader product ecosystem.
