OEM remanufacturing evolves: Industry impact ahead
June 11, 2024
OEMs are expanding remanufacturing efforts, promising significant changes in the consumables market.
Charles Brewer, President of Actionable Intelligence, spoke at The Recycler Live conference in Brussels and shared his insights on the evolution and future of OEM remanufacturing. Brewer outlined how OEMs are increasingly entering the remanufacturing market, which has significant implications for the industry.
Companies like Brother, HP, and Ricoh are expanding their remanufacturing programmes, which could reshape the market dynamics for consumables.
Brewer highlighted that these efforts are part of a broader trend driven by consumer demand for more sustainable products and new regulations in mature markets. OEMs are not only remanufacturing their own cartridges but also partnering with established remanufacturers to leverage existing expertise and infrastructure. This collaboration could lead to the development of high-quality, premium remanufactured cartridges that command higher prices than traditional third-party remans.
Despite these positive developments, the industry faces challenges such as falling print volumes and competitive pressures from cheap Chinese products. However, the entry of OEMs into the remanufacturing space could stabilise the market and create new growth opportunities.
Brewer’s presentation highlighted the potential for OEM remanufacturing to drive significant changes in the industry. While some players may benefit more than others, the shift towards sustainable, high-quality, remanufactured products is set to impact every link in the remanufacturing value chain.
