New HP firmware update affects 912 and 917 series cartridges

THI confirms JetWorld and OXE branded inks remain compatible.

HP released a new firmware update (version 2512B) on 21 April 2025, which is impacting printers that use HP 912 and 917 series ink cartridges. Polish aftermarket supplier THI has reported that the update may block some non-OEM cartridges, a development that could affect a wide range of OfficeJet and OfficeJet Pro printer models.

Among the potentially impacted models are the HP OfficeJet 8010, 8020, 8030 series, as well as the OfficeJet Pro 8022, 8023, 8024, 8025, and 8035 – all of which use HP 912 series cartridges. For the HP 917 series, affected printers include certain HP OfficeJet Pro 9010, 9020, and 9025 series models.

This is not the first such incident. A previous firmware update in 2024 introduced similar restrictions, blocking third-party cartridges and raising concerns across the remanufacturing industry. In both cases, users have found their printers suddenly rejecting cartridges that previously worked without issue.

THI confirmed that its JetWorld and OXE branded ink cartridges remain fully compatible with firmware version 2512B and are available from stock.
