Kyocera’s headquarters moves beyond fossil fuels

December 2, 2024

Kyoto Office Tower now runs on 100% renewable energy.

Kyocera Corporation (Kyocera) announced that it has begun supplying 100% of the electricity for its global headquarters using renewable energy resources.

The long-planned initiative, which took effect 1 October, is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 2,000 tons annually from the headquarters building, a 20-story office tower with total floor space of more than 45,000 square meters in Kyoto’s Fushimi Ward.

This represents another step toward independence from fossil fuels by Kyocera, which obtained a retail electricity provider license in December 2022 that enables it to procure and supply its own electricity independently instead of relying on conventional utility power.

Kyocera will be using non-FIT (Feed-in Tariff) renewable energy to ensure the traceability of the electricity supplied as 100% renewable. This is a system in Japan where power companies buy renewable energy at a fixed price for a set period.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Kyocera is increasing its adoption of renewable energy across all of its factories, offices, and sales locations, not just at its headquarters, to achieve its environmental goals. Kyocera’s Group-wide targets include reducing greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 46% by fiscal 2031 (compared to fiscal 2020), and achieving full carbon neutrality by fiscal 2051.
