Jail sentence for toner theft

David Miedel, of Michigan, has been sentenced for his part in the theft of Xerox toner.
42-year-old Miedel was sentenced to a year in prison and ordered to pay $1.03 million (€833,000) restitution to Xerox, following his conviction for conspiracy to transfer stolen property in interstate commerce, reports 13 WHAM.
The OEM provides its branded toner to customers who have leased office equipment. Miedel was working at a Xerox warehouse in Charlotte, North Carolina in August 2015, where surplus supplies returned by the company’s customers were stored.
In September of that year, Miedel purchased the supplies “for himself and his partner”, paying the warehouse employees a cash sum of $1,800 (€1,455) before selling the supplies himself. He then began buying stolen Xerox supplies from a figure in Webster, New York, with the purchases reaching a grand total of around $200,000 (€161,700). The prosecution alleges that the total loss to the OEM as a result was over $1 million (€808,500).
The sentencing followed an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations and its Immigration and Customs Enforcement department, led by Kevin Kelly.
