Is HP discontinuing HP+ and Instant Ink for laser printers?
July 3, 2024
If HP is discontinuing HP+ and Instant Ink for LaserJet printers, it could be good news for the aftermarket.
HP has not officially announced the discontinuation of its “HP+” programme and “Instant Ink” toner subscription for their LaserJet printers that was introduced over three years ago. The German online news portal, Druckerchannel, is reporting the impending demise of the HP+ and “Instant Ink” for their LaserJet printers.
The HP+ requires all LaserJet printers marked with an “e” to have mandatory registration and constant online access, and owners must exclusively use HP original toner. According to Druckerchannel, these models are now being phased out and the voluntary Instant Ink subscription for toner will soon be unavailable to new customers.
The HP+ programme was designed to boost customer loyalty by offering benefits such as an extra year of warranty, extended app functions, and cloud printing capabilities. However, it mandated that LaserJet printers with an “e” in their model number be constantly connected to the internet, a requirement that has faced criticism, especially from professional users with stringent security policies.
HP announced at The Recycler Live conference in Brussels last month that their SecuReuse programme would include HP+ cartridges. The discontinuation of the subscription model for HP+ and Instant Ink for LaserJet printers would appear to align with these changes and possibly pave the way for a more cohesive approach to cartridge reuse and recycling.
According to Druckerchannel, the affected models, include the HP LaserJet M110we and HP LaserJet Pro 4002dwe, will no longer be available, while standard models without these HP+ restrictions remain on the market.
As we went to press, a check of the HP website did not mention that HP+ is being discontinued.
