Berlin raids expose counterfeit printer goods; six suspects under investigation for fraud.
In 2024, German police dismantled a multimillion-euro counterfeiting ring dealing in fake imaging consumables, following coordinated raids across Berlin and surrounding areas. Nearly 70 officers searched 20 locations—including commercial sites and a call centre hidden in a residential property—seizing counterfeit cartridges, cash, and production equipment.
The investigation targets six individuals accused of selling fraudulent print supplies online, infringing trademarks of ICCE member companies. Authorities estimate the operation generated €3.5 million ($4.1 million) in quarterly turnover since at least October 2022.
ICCE members, which supported the raids with intelligence and verification, highlighted the importance of buying from trusted resellers. An international e-commerce platform also aided enforcement.
“At ICCE, we take pride in our ongoing support for customs, police, and other authorities. We equip officials with detailed intelligence and specialised training to combat the counterfeit print supplies trade effectively. Our collaborative efforts in enforcement activities play a crucial role in safeguarding consumers and markets from illegal and often substandard counterfeit imaging consumables.” said Regional Investigations Manager, Anti Counterfeiting And Fraud, HP.
German prosecutors are pursuing charges of fraud and trademark infringement, as authorities intensify efforts to combat illicit trade in digital consumables.
