HPE warns of failing SSDs
November 28, 2019
HPE has issued a warning about failing Solid State hard drives which require immediate firmware updates to avoid total loss of data.
In an HPE issued Support Communication/ Customer Bulletin, the company is warning of HPE SAS Solid State Drives (SSD) that will fail at 32,768 hours (equals 3 years, 270 days 8 hours) of operation.
HPE was alerted by one of its SSD manufacturers about the problem and has issued a table of affected server and storage products. You can find the list here.
The customer bulletin says: “This HPD8 firmware is considered a critical fix and is required to address the issue detailed below. HPE strongly recommends immediate application of this critical fix. Neglecting to update to SSD Firmware Version HPD8 will result in drive failure and data loss at 32,768 hours of operation and require restoration of data from backup in non-fault tolerance, such as RAID 0 and in fault tolerance RAID mode if more drives fail than what is supported by the fault tolerance RAID mode logical drive.”
If the failure of the SSD drive occurs, no data can be recovered. This is particularly critical if several SSDs were installed at the same time because these will also fail at the same time.
The communication goes on to say: “By disregarding this notification and not performing the recommended resolution, the customer accepts the risk of incurring future related errors.”
