HP Street Code – Leveraging the power of print

November 10, 2022

HP Indonesia, in collaboration with Darbotz, Prestasi Junior Indonesia (PJI), and Kumala Foundation, wrapped up HP Street Code, a first-of-its-kind programme leveraging the power of print technology to instil coding, creative and digital skills, opening up new opportunities for 20 young Indonesians from underserved communities to thrive in a digital era.

The four-week experiential learning programme combined HP Smart Tank 519 printer tank technology with PJI’s youth programme expertise to create a unique paper-based coding curriculum, providing easy access to programming and digital capabilities.

The 20 student beneficiaries from the Kumala Foundation gathered in North Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok Area and were immersed in a learning space underneath a toll road in North Jakarta. The students leveraged print and tactile mediums to hone their creativity, knowledge retention, collaboration, and logical thinking – all critical skills for the world of tomorrow.

The youth concluded the programme by collectively developing a unique code-based Darbotz and HP artwork. The artwork is displayed as an augmented reality projection onto a metropolitan building adjacent to the bustling Blok M Square in South Jakarta, acting as the canvas for the youths’ coding creations and digital art.

“Given the constant change in the way we learn and work today, we have to embrace the concept of hybrid learning and develop future-ready skills. Through HP Street Code, we are leveraging the power of print to innovate and evolve the way we learn in the hybrid world and help our youth to thrive in the emerging digital era,” said Michele Huang, Print Category Director of HP for Southeast Asia and Head of Print Category of HP Indonesia.

“Our beneficiaries, who are Jakartan children aged 15-17 years, have been enthusiastic throughout the program, and we are very excited to see how we can extend this opportunity to other children. Learning coding with print has shown how we can make learning more accessible in this digital era, despite the challenges we face,” said Abah Dindin, Head of Yayasan Kumala.

“As a street artist, this collaboration with HP to inspire youth in Jakarta through coding, AR and digital artwork, really appeals to my own mission to create and open people’s eyes to provoking urban art. I hope HP Street Code helps youth in Jakarta see the genuine possibilities that new digital skills can bring,” said Darbotz.

HP added that it believes that print technology can be an inclusive educational tool to provide learning opportunities and enable more accessible education amidst the hybrid era.
