HP firmware updates threaten aftermarket supplies industry
September 23, 2024
HP firmware blocks third-party cartridges, leading to consumer backlash and industry concern.
HP’s latest firmware updates have once again raised tensions between the tech giant and the aftermarket consumables industry. Affected printers, including those using 67 and 305 series cartridges, now block non-HP cartridges through dynamic security features embedded in the September 2024 firmware (version 2424DR/2424BR). Industry insiders claim that HP’s moves are designed to maintain control over its consumables market, but they are causing significant disruption for users of remanufactured and third-party cartridges.
Third-party chip manufacturer Chipjet, however, confirmed via LinkedIn that its replacement chips remain functional after the update. The company tested its products and found no immediate issues, but many smaller aftermarket suppliers may not be faring as well?.
Previous firmware updates, such as those in April 2022 and February 2024, affected HP LaserJet models, blocking third-party cartridges and triggering warnings such as “used or counterfeit cartridges” after installation?. This pattern of restricting non-HP products has angered consumers and remanufacturers alike, especially as these updates are often automatically applied without user consent?.
To counter this, aftermarket suppliers and retailers recommend that users disable the automatic firmware update on their printers. Go to printer settings and make sure that Automatic Updates is turned off. By turning off automatic updates in the printer’s settings menu, users can prevent future blocks on non-HP cartridges. However, industry experts point out that these measures are temporary fixes to a deeper issue surrounding competition and consumer choice?.
The continued push for these updates by HP continues to ignite concerns over anti-competitive behaviour, as well as potential environmental impacts, as remanufactured cartridges, are seen as a more sustainable option, are being squeezed out of the market.
