HP firmware updates confirmed

May 8, 2025

HP firmware updates continue to affect third-party cartridge compatibility. The latest versions impact OfficeJet and LaserJet models, prompting users to check before installing.

HP has released new firmware updates affecting a range of OfficeJet and LaserJet printers, raising concerns among users reliant on third-party cartridges.

Firmware version 2514A, dated 6 May 2025, applies to HP OfficeJet Pro models including the 7720, 7730, 7740, 8210, 8710, 8715, 8720, 8725, 8730, and 8740. This update affects printers using HP 953 series cartridges.

A separate firmware release, version 2513A, dated 30 April 2025, impacts HP LaserJet Pro 4001, 4002, 4102 and MFP 4101 devices, which use W1490A/X and W1390A/X toner cartridges.

Firmware updates have previously disrupted the use of third-party consumables by rendering chips unreadable or generating error messages. End users are advised to check the firmware version installed on their device before updating and consult suppliers for compatibility confirmation.

Users wishing to avoid automatic firmware updates can disable them via the printer’s settings menu or through the HP Smart app. On many models, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer, then set Allow Updates to ‘No’ or ‘Off’. Some updates may still be pushed via Wi-Fi unless the printer is disconnected from the network.

Polish supplier THI has confirmed that its JetWorld and OXE branded cartridges remain fully compatible with both firmware versions. Stock is available for immediate delivery.
