HP declares war on clones again?

February 7, 2018

Following last year’s publication of a flyer warning against the dangers of clone cartridges, HP has released another leaflet presenting the risks in more detail.

While the previous leaflet drew a lengthy refutation from ETIRA due to the inaccurate statements HP made about remanufactured cartridges, prompting the OEM to amend its wording, the new leaflet focuses entirely on the issue of clones.

Describing them as “new cartridges that are not affiliated with or authorised by HP”, the OEM states that, while HP has been named one of the world’s most sustainable companies, the producers of clones “do not have sustainability programs or recycling capabilities, and do not meet emission guideline limits.”

The leaflet includes a table comparing the indoor emissions of clone cartridges with original HP cartridges, and offers a variety of other warnings, including that clones offer inconsistent print quality, “resulting in reprinting and increased paper consumption”. HP states that clone cartridges contribute to 40 percent more energy usage, a 54 percent rise in the use of fossil fuels, and a 55 percent larger carbon footprint.

At the end of the leaflet HP states that “almost all clone cartridges end up in a landfill”, while HP “makes it free and easy to recycle your used cartridges through the HP Planet Partners program”.
