Freight rates to stay high, says DHL
February 8, 2022
DHL expects freight rates to remain high in 2022.
The German logistics company Deutsche Post DHL does not expect freight costs to ease this year. Tim Scharwath told Reuters: “The short-term rate will rise a little in air and ocean freight, the long-term rate will probably remain at the 2021 level.”
“In air freight, the rate might even go up a little bit more in the short term, there is even tighter capacity there.” Read more here.
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact on the office imaging sector with ongoing delays. Several companies report 6 to 8 weeks delays and increased costs. Currently, if you can get a container and a booking in a ship the cost of a 40’ container from China to Hamburg is €15,750 ($18,000).
One European importer who supplies low-cost consumables told The Recycler “that shipping costs were now more than 35% of the value of the shipment and that prices would have to increase.” He declined to say how much prices would have to increase by.
Editor: Across the board the Omicron coronavirus variant has caused staff shortages and shipping delays compound the situation with little chance of pre-pandemic rates emerging this year or next and presenting an ongoing logistical challenge for the industry.
