Firmware Warning: Epson’s latest update blocks third-party cartridges
October 16, 2019
“Turn off Epson printer updates” is the message from Ink Hub who warn that Epson’s latest firmware update stops the use of third party cartridges.
Dean Michael, Manager of Adelaide, Australia based Ink Hub, issued the warning via his latest blog that Epson has just released another update for many of their printers (October 2019). He writes: “Once again, these updates do absolutely nothing at all to improve the printer’s performance as they are purely done to stop the use of generic cartridges.”
The blog gives detailed instructions (pictured) which will enable users to continue using third party cartridges, but also warns that if users do not turn off the updates, the firmware update will be “rendered useless”.
Michael wrote: “Ink Hub has already approached the ACCC on several occasions about this practice but unfortunately it has fallen on deaf ears. We believe that the end user has the rights to use a cheaper priced consumable and should not be held captive by these big corporations who continue to exploit the consumer.”
The printers recently affected by this update include all those using the Epson 202XL, 288XL, 410XL, 702XL and 802XL cartridges. The affected printer models include Epson WF-2860, XP-5100, WorkForce Pro WF-3720, WF-3725 and WF-3730, WF-4720, WF-4740, WF-4745, XP-240, XP-340, XP-344, XP-440, XP-530, XP-540, XP-630, XP-640, XP-830 and XP-900 devices.
Note: Although the above diagram indicates that it is for the Epson XP430 it is the same process for all of the latest Epson printers.
