ETIRA pushes for higher cartridge reuse
July 17, 2024
EU regulations set to revolutionise the remanufacturing industry with new sustainability and repairability standards.
At the recent The Recycler Live conference, Vincent van Dijk, Secretary General of the European Association of Toner and Inkjet Remanufacturers (ETIRA), outlined the significant impact of EU environmental policies on the cartridge remanufacturing industry. ETIRA is actively involved in lobbying and advocating for the industry’s interests.
Van Dijk highlighted key EU regulations, including waste laws, chemicals laws, and sustainability initiatives like the Right to Repair and Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). These policies aim to enhance product reuse and repairability, setting ambitious targets for the remanufacturing industry. For instance, the ESPR mandates that 20-25% of newly produced cartridges must be reused.
One of the most significant aspects discussed was the introduction of the Right to Repair, which requires manufacturers to enable easy repairs by third parties, including the ability to reset chips in cartridges. This initiative aims to reduce waste and promote sustainability by making products easier to repair and reuse. The Green Claims Directive also plays a crucial role, banning greenwashing and ensuring that companies substantiate their environmental claims.
Despite these progressive steps, the industry faces challenges, such as technological barriers from OEM firmware updates, competitive market pressures, and the need for skilled technicians. ETIRA’s advocacy has been pivotal in pushing for reforms that benefit remanufacturers and enhance the industry’s overall sustainability.
The proposed changes promise to revolutionise the EU printer and consumables market if implemented. Increased reuse rates, compulsory quality standards, and better transparency will require all market players to adapt. These policies are expected to significantly boost the quality and sustainability of remanufactured products, aligning with ETIRA’s goals of promoting cartridge reuse and reducing environmental impact.
The presentation underscored the transformative potential of upcoming EU regulations. While the remanufacturing industry faces several hurdles, the new policies present a unique opportunity for growth and sustainability, setting a high standard for environmental responsibility and market practices.
