Disappearing ink “unprints” itself to save paper

Feb 20, 2025 | 0 comments

Blue Planet Ink has released the new Paper Saver 62 cartridge with self-erasing ink for use in HP printers.

The remanufactured cartridge is filled with a proprietary disappearing ink which becomes invisible over time, allowing paper to be reused.

“We are pleased to expand our line of HP compatible cartridges to make printing with HP printers far more sustainable than what HP could achieve with its own technology.” said Carl Yee, President of Blue Planet Ink. “Our ink is temporary so the same paper can be used again and again. When paper is reused, printing becomes far more sustainable.”

Paper Saver ink is a purple coloured ink that prints on normal paper and gradually becomes colourless. Over time the paper becomes “unprinted” and indistinguishable from new paper.

The “unprinting” is based on a chemical reaction of Paper Saver ink and air. With exposure to air the ink absorbs carbon dioxide and water vapor and undergoes a chemical reaction which lowers its pH. As the pH drops the dye in the ink becomes colorless and the paper looks just like new paper.
