Chipjet talks firmware downgrades

Nov 6, 2020 | 0 comments

In this latest article of its tips series, Chipjet talks about the latest firmware update effecting third party HP CF500 cartridges.

On 2 November 2020, Chipjet found that HP released a new firmware update (version: 20201021) to the printer series that uses CF500 cartridges. These updates were sent via Wi-Fi (or wired network) according to Chipjet, which caused the replacement chips in the market to no longer be recognised by the printers and display a “Supply problem” message.

As a result, Chipjet looked at giving a solution as outlined below for users to deal with the impact from this update.

  1. Operation Steps on Printer

Click “Setup” on the printer and choose “Service”

Select “Laser Jet Update” and click “Manage Updates”

Choose “Check Automatically” and click “OFF”

Click “Allow Updates” and check “NO”

Click “Allow Downgrade” and check “YES”

  1. Operation Steps on HP Website
  • Visit HP website and select “Software and drivers” in the drop-down list

  • Enter your printers model name
  • Download the previous firmware upgrade package (current version: 20200621)

  1. Downgrade Steps
  • Open the downloaded firmware package and choose respective printer model

  • Then click “Send Firmware” to start upgrading.
  • The smiling face on the right means the downgrade has been successful

Chipjet added that the current downloadable firmware version on HP website is 20200612. Once it has been updated to the 20201021 version, users should not download that version.
