China: HP continues production
October 24, 2019
HP commits to China and hiring is up 72 percent.
In recent weeks a number of US-based companies have been reflecting on the US – China trade war and deciding whether to repatriate or move production or maintain production in China for the time being.
Jon Marino, Finance Editor Thinknum penned an article claiming HP’s hiring in China is up 72 percent which seems to be in line with other major US-based companies who are doing the same. Motives are not quite clear but he describes it as going “back into business as usual in China”.
The article said that HP’s job postings in China, have increased more than 77 percent since the end of second financial quarter whereas globally job postings are less than five percent.
Earlier this year several other OEMs announced their move of production to other parts of the world for equipment destined for the US market. Ricoh is looking to shift production to Thailand, while Konica Minolta is shifting production between its various plants so equipment destined for the US market will be produced in Malaysia. Canon has conducted feasibility studies across 40 countries to way up options for moving its production out of China.
Kodak and Fujifilm already moved for exclusion on the tariffs earlier this year.
In September The Recycler reported that in the ongoing US – China trade war, the US granted a one-year tariff exemption to a wide range of products made in China, including some printer consumables.
