Canon launches two new refurbished MFP models in Japan

July 11, 2024

Canon will release new products in its “Refreshed” series of refurbished multifunction printers , the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C3530F III-RG in late July 2024 and the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5550F III-RG in early August 2024.

Canon has been remanufacturing used MFPs since 1992, and has commercialised recycled MFPs under the “Refreshed” series.

Collected products are disassembled down to the component level, washed and cleaned, and then deteriorated or worn parts are replaced according to strict recycling standards, reusing usable parts.

Based on the operation data of the collected MFPs, such as the number of years of operation, failure history, and number of prints, the system automatically determines whether parts can be reused, and maximises the use of reusable parts. In addition to standardising parts and units, platform-type development that standardises the framework of the main body for each product class has led to an increase in reusable parts, as parts from different models in the same class can be used.

Through these efforts, the parts reuse rate of the “C3530F III-RG” has increased from approximately 94.3% in the previous model to approximately 95.5%, and the parts reuse rate of the “C5550F III-RG” has increased from approximately 84% in the previous model to approximately 94%.

As a result, all models of remanufactured colour MFPs provided by Canon have the industry’s highest parts reuse rate of over 90%, and the carbon footprint value has been reduced by approximately 67% for the “C3530F III-RG” and approximately 59% for the “C5550F III-RG” compared to new products, according to Canon.

In the “Refreshed” series, cardboard is used for the cushioning and pallet materials of the packaging that supports the product, reducing the amount of plastic and eliminating the use of wood. For the “C3530F III-RG”, some of the packaging has been changed from polyethylene bags to paper bags, reducing the amount of plastic used in the packaging by about 8% from about 517g in the previous model to about 472g. In addition, about 83% of the total plastic used in the packaging has been switched to recycled plastic, strengthening efforts to make effective use of limited resources.
