Canon has been ranked first among Japanese companies for 15 years running when it comes to patent. Meanwhile in the USA Canon has ranked in the top five in US patent rankings for 34 years running and first among Japanese companies for 15 years running, and announces more Amazon takedowns.
Canon Inc. ranked third for the number of US patents awarded in 2019, becoming the only company in the world to have ranked in the top five for 34 years running, according to the latest ranking of preliminary patent results issued by IFI CLAIMS Patent Services. What’s more, Canon once again ranked first among Japanese companies.
Canon explained that it actively promotes the globalisation of its business and places great value on obtaining patents overseas, carefully adhering to a patent-filing strategy that pursues patents in essential countries and regions while taking into consideration the business strategies and technology and product trends unique to each location. Among these, the United States, with its many high-tech companies and large market scale, represents a particularly important region in terms of business expansion and technology alliances.
Canon also announced that it filed Report Infringement Forms with Amazon.de, and Amazon.es based on the alleged use of claims 1 and 2 of the Germany, and Spanish portions of Canon’s European Patent EP 1 977 289 (“EP ‘289”) regarding certain models of toner cartridges offered by SIA “Solution” under the following ASINs (Amazon Standard Identification Numbers).

Afterwards, Amazon took down the respective products. These products are compatible with the OEM HP cartridge models and provide inter alia a non-OEM housing and a non-OEM force receiving device according to claim 1 of EP ‘289. Furthermore, they comprise an elastic portion according to claim 2 of EP ‘289.
Furthermore, Canon announced the filing of an infringement report with Amazon.com seeking removal of Amazon.com listings for certain toner cartridges sold by M&F Shop for use in HP laser beam printers.
Canon’s infringement report alleged that certain model CE310A, CE311A, CE312A and CE313A toner cartridges sold by M&F Shop via Amazon.com infringed Canon’s U.S. Patent No. 8,688,008. Canon requested that Amazon remove M&F Shop’s listings for those products, namely, M&F Shop’s listings with Amazon Standard Identification Numbers (“ASINs”) B01GDRZLI4, B01GDS9D3C, B01GDSAI2W, B01GDRXXWA, B01GDS63P8, B01GDS8JN2, B01GDS4OX6, B01GDSC90Q, B01GDS9W38, B01GDSB1YQ, B01GDS2DBQ and B01GDSCXWK.
At the time of this announcement, the above-identified M&F Shop’s listings were no longer available on Amazon.com.
