Brother: Strong revenue growth amid profit pressures

Despite revenue gains, operating and comprehensive profits Brother struggles against rising costs and currency impact.
The Japanese electronics firm reported a 6.9% rise in revenue, achieving ¥427.2 billion ($2.85 billion/ €2.70 billion), for the first half of its fiscal year ending in March 2025. The increase, largely driven by its Printing & Solutions division, highlighted sustained demand in the printer market, marking the segment as the company’s revenue backbone.
In the Printing & Solutions segment alone, revenue climbed to ¥266.3 billion ($1.78 billion/ €1.68 billion), a 7% year-on-year increase. Segment profits also rose to ¥35.0 billion ($234 million/ €221 million), reflecting strong consumer and business appetite for printers and associated products. However, the company faces cost pressures, as operating profits slipped by 3% to ¥38.5 billion ($258 million/ €243 million), squeezed by a rise in selling, general, and administrative expenses.
The Machinery and Domino segments, specialising in machine tools and digital printing equipment respectively, saw moderate but constrained performance, with revenues of ¥41.9 billion ($281 million/ €265 million) and ¥59.2 billion ($397 million/ €375 million). Both contributed limited profits amid what the company described as “challenging market conditions.”
The company remains optimistic about its second-half outlook, projecting a 5.1% increase in revenue for the full fiscal year to ¥865 billion ($5.77 billion/ €5.45 billion), with a 52.6% rise in operating profit forecasted. However, industry analysts point to continued currency volatility as a risk factor that could impact these forecasts.
