Brother program benefits low-income schools

As part of its continuing commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, Brother International Corporation has launched an expansive program to support low-income schools near its US locations.

For schools selected, Brother supplies dozens of its top-tier machines and coordinates activities that connect Brother associates to faculty members and students alike. The program launched at Weston Elementary School in Manville, New Jersey and will soon include schools near some of the other Brother U.S. offices.

Over 40 Brother machines were donated and installed at Weston Elementary, including printers, scanners, P-touch labellers, and a ScanNCut crafting machine. Through a complete transformation of the school’s office equipment technology, Brother hopes to significantly increase the efficiency of operations at the school, so that more of the teachers’ time could be devoted to educating. In addition to the technology donation, Weston Elementary received two years’ worth of refill supplies and Brother’s commitment to conduct some interactive activities at the school.

The Weston Elementary School program kicked off with a Brother Activity Day, where over 20 Brother associates partnered with students to create Valentine’s Day cards and crafts.  In addition to creating cards for loved ones, including Goldie the goldfish, each classroom created a string of decorative hearts, and each student’s name was attached to their favourite heart design with a P-touch labeller.  Brother-branded winter hats were distributed to every student and faculty member.

“We are so grateful to Brother and its employees for taking the time to come out to our school and make this fun day possible for our students,” said Melissa Keiser, Weston Elementary School principal. “The kids really enjoyed themselves and both students and faculty will benefit tremendously from the new equipment that was donated.”

After the last hats were handed out, Brother catered lunch for the faculty and held presentations to highlight its commitment to community engagement.  In addition, presenters shared top features of the donated equipment as well as the numerous resources available for teachers on Brother’s CreativeCenter website.

“Through this program, we are continuing Brother’s long history of servicing the communities in which we live and work,” said Henry Sacco, Brother Sr. Vice President. “By providing this equipment and support to utilize it, we are giving students and teachers tools to create and achieve.  We are excited to be working with our local schools, faculty and children.”

Moving forward, Brother hopes to further engage with the community at Weston through additional initiatives. With a dedication to dynamic partnerships, Brother will be supporting not only Weston Elementary, but schools near its Colorado and Tennessee offices as well.
