Brother profits rise despite cost pressures
February 6, 2025
Printer sales and foreign exchange gains boost Brother’s results, but higher costs squeeze margins.
Brother Industries reported an 8.6% rise in third-quarter sales revenue to ¥231.5 billion ($1.55 billion/ €1.43 billion), driven by strong demand for printers and consumables.
The Printing & Solutions (P&S) division, its largest segment, saw an 8.9% year-on-year increase in hardware sales and a 14% rise in laser consumables sales. Despite higher sales, profitability came under pressure. Business segment profit climbed 25.1% to ¥26.2 billion ($176 million/ €162 million), but rising sales and promotional expenses weighed on margins.
The company revised full-year revenue guidance upwards to ¥875 billion ($5.86 billion/ €5.41 billion), citing foreign exchange gains and strong US and European demand, but left profit forecasts unchanged at ¥80 billion ($537 million/ €496 million) due to higher operating costs.
Printer hardware growth remained uneven. While inkjet and laser printer sales expanded in the US and Europe, Japan saw a 4.5% decline. Label printers grew 6.3%, adding to gains in the Personal & Home division, where revenue rose 24.1%.
