Brother launches remanufactured ink cartridge programme
September 30, 2024
Brother Industries UK begins remanufacturing ink cartridges, twenty years and 40 million cartridges after starting the remanufacturing of laser cartridges.
The company has announced that Brother Industries UK (BIUK) has now begun to remanufacture ink cartridges used in inkjet printers and All-in-One devices. Used ink cartridges collected from customers across Europe and through their participation in the Circular Planet programme run by Close the Loop.
The returned cartridges are disassembled, cleaned, and refurbished to ensure the same level of performance as new products and shipped out to customers for reuse. The ink cartridge remanufacturing programme builds on the technologies and expertise accumulated through twenty years of toner cartridge remanufacturing.
The launch of remanufactured ink cartridges builds on the technologies and expertise accumulated through twenty years of remanufacturing more than forty million toner cartridges and represents a next step in reuse.
Their cartridge collection programme currently operates in 30 European countries. Return options may differ between countries, but in the UK, Brother customers can return used inkjet cartridges using a postpaid envelope supplied with the cartridge. The envelope can hold up to four cartridges and can be posted either through a local post box or dropped off at the post office. For larger quantities, customers can order a free-post recycling box that holds up to 20 cartridges. After filling the box, it can also be dropped off at a local post office. Cartridges not suitable for remanufacturing are recycled.

As revealed at the Circular Planet Open Day, Brother’s remanufactured cartridges are sold as new and do not carry any price differential, underscoring their confidence in their quality and demonstrates the company’s ability to respond to the evolving demands of eco-conscious consumers.
According to Brother, the remanufacturing process reduces waste, conserves resources, and cuts down on carbon emissions and directly supports Brother Industries Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). These are a set of 17 global goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
