Abu Dhabi says NO to single-use plastics
March 10, 2020
Abu Dhabi has launched an initiative to phase out and eventually ban single-use plastic within two years.
The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi took to Twitter to launch what it calls a progressive policy to reduce consumption of single-use plastics in the Emirates. By 2021 it aims for Abu Dhabi to be free of single use plastic bags and encourage using sustainable alternatives.
Currently, the UAE consumes 11bn plastic bags annually, 1,184 bags per person – over three times the global average.
The Environmental agency is also looking to have in place by then a bottle recycling programme to be implemented across retail outlets.
Like many governments lately, the issue of single-use plastics is high on the agenda in most countries. In 2018 the Government of the Balearic Islands decided to ban single-use plastics. Details released recently show that the ban on the Balearic Islands will include single-use cartridges.
