Indian plastic waste hits the road

Mar 19, 2018 | 0 comments

India is constructing its roads from waste plastic, a new video from the World Economic Forum shows.

Under the system, plastic litter and waste will be collected by designated waste pickers, which is then shredded in machines that are subsidised by the country’s government. The shredded plastic is then sold to road builders.

As well as the system reducing pollution and creating jobs, the roads constructed are said to be “more durable against floods and extreme heat” than conventional carriageways.

They are now reportedly the “first choice” of the Indian Government, and the subcontinental country boasts over 21,000 miles of plastic roads, including most city streets.
