Canon Singapore and NLB expand cartridge recycling programme

Aug 29, 2025

Canon Singapore Pte. Ltd. (Canon Singapore) in partnership with the National Library Board (NLB), expanded the Cartridge Recycling Programme.

Originally launched in 2024, the initiative began with five participating libraries, the National Library Building and libraries at Jurong, Punggol, Tampines and Woodlands, offering the public a way to recycle used ink and toner cartridges. The expanded programme now includes ten additional library drop-off points nationwide, making it easier for Singapore residents to contribute to environmental sustainability.

To mark the SG60 spirit of unity and the country’s continued commitment to sustainability, Canon Singapore has launched the “Inkfinity” Green Pledge, a community-led campaign that invites Singapore residents to take meaningful action towards a greener future.

From 29 August to 14 November 2025, the campaign invites participants to:

  • Snap a photo of themselves with the cartridge recycling bins at participating locations.
  • Make a personal pledge towards an eco-friendly lifestyle.
  • Post the photo on Instagram with their pledge in the caption along with the hashtag #InkfinityGreenPledge and tag the official @CanonSingapore account.

With Singapore’s current national recycling rate at 50%, there is an opportunity for companies to step up and play a bigger part to boost the recycling rate for the good of the environment.

Through the cartridge recycling programme, Canon Singapore said it aims to advocate environmental responsibility efforts contributing to Singapore’s Zero Waste Masterplan. The collected ink/toner cartridges will be sent to a licensed facility where the cartridges will be dismantled. Extracted metals and plastics will be sent to downstream recyclers for recovery into raw materials. Non-recyclable parts/materials will be sent to an incineration plant for waste-to-energy generation.

Mr. Andrew Koh, Senior Vice President and Head of Singapore Operations Group, Canon Singapore, shared: “At Canon, our philosophy of Kyosei – living and working together for the common good – drives everything we do. This partnership with NLB is much more than a recycling initiative but a conscious collective nationwide sustainability movement, upon which we empower all Singapore residents to champion a greener, more sustainable future through small, everyday actions.”

NLB’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Mr. Eric Chin, stated: “We have been encouraged by the positive response to the pilot phase of this recycling initiative where any brand of ink and toner cartridges can be responsibly recycled. This initiative fills a gap in the recycling eco-system so we are pleased to strengthen our partnership with Canon Singapore by expanding this initiative to more libraries across Singapore. This is part of our ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability where our libraries can serve as community touchpoints for green initiatives.”
