Samsung to build second US chip factory

by | Sep 8, 2021 | 0 comments

Samsung is currently evaluating two sites in the USA to locate their proposed $17 billion (€14 billion) chip factory.

The South Korean tech giant is looking at two sites, one in Austin, Texas, and the second site is in the city of Taylor, located 25 miles (40 kilometres) from Austin. The factory is projected to break ground early next year, and production to start in late 2024 and create a total of approximately 2,585 direct and indirect new jobs.

The city of Taylor meets on the 8th of September to finalise a series of tax breaks to incentivise Samsung to choose the city of Taylor as the site for their second US plant.

Since long before the pandemic, the demand for microchips has exceeded supply, causing problems in every industry. Motor manufacturers (as evidenced by The Recycler’s editor waiting five months for a new car and no forecast of delivery yet) are particularly hit hard at the moment.
